The Cherokee people have a long history in Western North Carolina, dating back thousands of years. They were traditionally farmers, hunters, and gatherers, living in self-sufficient villages. The EBCI are the direct descendants of those who remained in the east after the forced removal of the Cherokee to Oklahoma in the 1830s. 
 
Hawks often symbolize guidance, clear vision, the ability to rise above challenges, and strength.
